Steampunk anime and cartoon movies

In this section, we picked what we think are the top 4 steampunk anime you can find on the web.

Steamboy

On our first place, we can find the classic Steamboy. Produced by¬†¬†Katsuhiro ŇĆtomo¬† (producer of the acclaimed movie Akira), tells the story about Ray Steam, a young boy during a post-Victorian era in London. Lloyd is taken prisoner by the company where his father works, Lloyd. The thing gets wicked when Ray gets to know his kidnapper. Steampunk is everywhere, from flying zeppelins to multiples devices that appear through the movie. This anime movie is the insignia of the steampunk cartoon industry.

Its the story about a steampunk girl called Sophie, that gets involved in a war between two kingdoms when she meets a wizard named Howl. The steampunk influence kicks in in Miyazaki’s crusade to demonstrate air flight as a novel and kind technological development, by picturing giant steampunk-theme airships flying the skies. Pacifism is a recurrent theme in this movie.

On our third place, you will find a classic. Full Metal Alchemist is a manga series written by Hiromu Arakawa. Full Metal Alchemist connects fantastical themes with modern post-Victorian developments. The¬†philosopher’s stone, Alchemy, and other magical pre-victorian beliefs are interrelated into a thrilling epic. Thumbs up for this one.

9

On our last place, we chose this particular movie from Tim Burton. In a post-apocalyptic world dominated by machines, our main character, Nine, finds himself thriving to survive. When he decides that the way to change things y by fighting, the movie takes a turnaround. Glamorous details that are compressed in a dim atmosphere, this movie is recommended for Tim Burton fans.

Steampunk documentaries and independent films

What you will find in this section is quite unique because there is not much about there. We collected a series of independent films and documentaries about steampunk culture, its origins, and even some DIY recipes.

The City of Lost Children

The City of Lost Children is an independent film from 1995 that is revamped and showing at next Sundance festival. In this movie, there is an evil scientist that has a disease. He is unable to dream. Thus, he steals children in order to suck their dreams out of them. The movie tells the story of two kids who have to rescue another one from the evil doctor’s hands. Steampunk movies on Youtube

As we’ve reviewed, there are lots of steampunk movies that can be found on Amazon Prime. Yes, they are paid, but there is a reason for this. If you want high-quality films, then we suggest you go down for the ones we recommended right above.

Now if you wanna take a peek at other independent artists, then we suggest you check out these upcoming favorites.

Airlords Of Airia

The first one we recommend you is Airlords Of Airia. It is a short steampunk airship movie that has been created by an independent film group. It consists of an epic movie that includes a plot that develops between airship commanders and wars between kingdoms. This short film has won several awards due to the high-quality result they’ve achieved.

A short comment about this movie: Actors are Deutsch. This means that the movie has been translated, but you will find a certain overlap between the actor’s mouths and the audio. If you take into account the whole context, then you won’t find it harmful at all.

You can check them out in their Youtube link here.

After you’ve seen this, there are rumors that they are gonna present a sequel. We have just to wait and see what happens.

Aurora

Aurora is a steampunk 33-minute short film that can be found on Youtube as well.

Once again, there is epicness in the plot. But there are certain differences regarding the rest with our previous movie.

To start with, Aurora’s cast crew is quite huge for a short film. During the 33 minutes, at least 30 characters can be recognized. Also, props, attires, and accessories are precisely crafted. I mean, it’s not easy to perform a steampunk movie in this manner because each and every gadget that is used needs to be adapted in a retro-futuristic way.

We believe these major changes are due to several reasons. But we find that the most important one is that is a film produced by two combined productions (Urtext + RoughCut).

All in all, character personifications are quite well performed. Characters talk in English as a native language. That is also a plus because it means there are no audio related imperfections. Also, they have quite amazing CGI’s too!

It’s a definite must for people who are looking for something out on Youtube. Check them out here.

Nemo, the Steampunk Movie

Nemo is a steampunk movie produced in France by Chicane Studio. It’s a relatively new movie that has been published in September 2017.

Once again, we find that this kind of short movies that have been produced by studios tend to be a high-quality product. In this case, I find that the French language with Youtube subtitles is the best way to see this movie. In this way, you won’t miss out the fascinating expressions that these French artists provide throughout the movie.

The movie has been segmented into five scenes and a final act. It the movie over 20 characters have been involved. The plot is exciting and is captivating. You will not want to stop until you finish the movie.

We will not spoil details about it. It’s a 38-minute movie. You’ll find the time to see it. Check it out here.

Best Steampunk Movies on Netflix

Actually, there are four main steampunk movies you can find on Netflix right now.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

If you ever were looking for a steampunk cartoon movie for kids, then this is the right one for you.

As we told you before, we won’t spoil anything. But, what we can say is that in this movie you will find our good old friend Milo Thatch. If you see him in any picture, you’ll recognize him instantly. This is one of the classical steampunk animated Disney movie characters. A young bold man with a couple of vintage sunglasses that is eager to explore the seas in order to find Atlantis.

There are also a couple more of characters that are styled in a steampunk fashion as well. In fact, we’ve reviewed a couple of them in our steampunk characters post. You can take a look at it if you want it in the link we just provided you.

Atlantis: The lost empire is the first movie of a three-part saga. This is one of those definite steampunk children’s cartoon movie that will allow you to introduce your kids into the topic in a friendly manner. In fact, what better than to have a classic 2000’s steampunk Disney movie for this?

This movie is a must. Check it out at Netflix if you can.

Van Helsing

We won’t talk much more about Van Helsing because we have reviewed right above. This is definitely not a children’s but rather a steampunk horror movie if you see it from that perspective.

If you don’t have kids, you won’t find it the horror type but rather a¬†dark gothic steampunk style movie. And, in fact, this is true in some sense. The mixture between fantastic elements like Frankenstein and Count Dracula adds up to create a hybrid steampunk-goth type of movie.

We’ve added this movie to the Netflix selection just to let you know that it’s available on high definition on Netflix.

The Golden Compass

We haven’t reviewed this movie on this post so far. This is a 2007 fantasy movie that cast a bunch of well-known artists such as¬†Dakota Blue Richards,¬†Nicole Kidman,¬†Daniel Craig,¬†Sam Elliott, and Eva Green.

Its inspired on the first book of a trilogy series, the Dark Matter, created by Phillip Pullman.¬† It’s a 2-hour movie that has been produced by New Line Cinema.

This is an awkward movie in many aspects. First, there are many details in about the movie that do not correlate with the bae novel. Second, there have been several religious protests towards this movie. It seems this was related to a certain offensive message to the Catholic church that can be seen along the movie.

Third, it has lots of CGI. For this reason, you would think that this could be another steampunk children’s movie. Well, it’s not. The plot is quite intricate, so we think this is not the ideal movie to share with your kids.

All in all, this is a true steampunk Hollywood movie that has failed to satisfy our steampunk appetite.

Anyway, it can be found in Netflix, so feel free to check it out!

April And the Extraordinary World

Once again, in there we find a true example of a steampunk animated cartoon movie that perhaps it’s not the most suitable for children.

April and the Extraordinary World is a 2015 steampunk cartoon movie that includes characters such as Marion Cotillard. It tells the story of April, a teenager living in a retrofuturistic XIX century steampunk world, who struggles to find a solution for several issues she gets caught into after the death of her parents.

This movie is a must for steampunk lovers because it has been, as Metacritic states, “universally acclaimed”. Its plot is fascinating and it dives deep into problems related to the lack of resources that are related to a post-industrial period. It resembles in some way the plots that involve post-apocalyptic steampunk worlds.

This is also one of our top recommendations of the post. Check it out on Netflix!
